Wartrace accepting applications and donations for Christmas program

Christmas plans are already underway in the Town of Wartrace as volunteers and leaders have set their hearts to help deserving local families. In a giving program hosted by the Wartrace Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD), the Parks and Recreation Committee, and the Police Department, applications are now being accepted for food and gift baskets.

“With Christmas just around the corner, we know that this can be an especially stressful time for struggling families,” said Alderman Tammy Leverette, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. “We are accepting applications from families, but friends and neighbors may also nominate others who could have their burden eased.”

Additionally, low-income elderly individuals and families and shut-ins may be nominated for fruit baskets. “As a firefighter, we often come across folks who are too proud to ask for help but we can see the need is there,” said Lieutenant Jesse Julien of the WVFD. “They deserve a good meal or fresh fruit from people in our community who truly care about their well-being.”

Mayor Vickie Smith expressed her appreciation to the community members planning the giving program. “It is an absolute blessing that we have people with such big hearts in Wartrace,” she said. “We are all enriched because of the generosity and kindness shown by our community volunteers. I want to personally thank each of them for already showing the true spirit of Wartrace during this upcoming Christmas season.”

If you would like to donate, bring items to Town Hall, the Fire Station, or contact any member of the Parks & Recreation Committee or any volunteer firefighter. Donations may include unexpired, nonperishable food items, unopened toys, and gift cards. Gift cards will be used to purchase specific clothing or toys for children, and to purchase food items such as milk, bread, and cheese on the date of delivery.

Eligible families and individuals must live within the town limits of Wartrace. The application gives recipients the choice of having items delivered by police car, fire truck, unmarked car, or to pick up the items themselves. Completed applications should be turned in at Wartrace Town Hall, 29 Main St., E. no later than Friday, December 6. If you are selected, you will be notified on December 9.
